Led by ixi

essexdance, Chancellor Hall, Market Road
Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 1XA

£150.00/£135.00 members of essexdance/£75.00 concessions
Aimed at dancers and media artists working in the field of performing
arts, this course will look at different prototyping tools, both for physical and virtual interfaces and their application across various art
forms including dance, movement, visual/digital art, film, photography and other areas concerned with interactivity and the
creative use of computers.

This is a hands-on, experimental experience suitable for all skill levels.

The three day workshop will be focusing mainly on the software PD (Pure Data). It will touch upon related softwares to introduce the basics of these technologies and how they can be used to enhance artists’ creativity and skills.

Pure Data is a real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video and graphical processing.
PD is close relative to Max/MSP. It is the third major branch of the patcher programming languages known as Max and is a free, multi-platform software.

PD can be used as a virtual electronic instrument, in a studio context or live. It also can process live or recorded material. You can create sound and video installations.

This workshop is about ideas; not focusing on the technical details of programming practices, but rather on how we use these environments for human expression.
For more details or to confirm a place, please contact Felicity at essexdance on 01245 346036 or email felicity@essexdance.co.uk by 29 March 2005.

The presentation will offer a series of reflections and experiments following a period in residence at essexdance and Signals Media and dialogues ‘on the road’ in Italy.

essexdance (in collaboration with WRA/NL; Igloo; Arts Council England and Dance City) hosted two residential professional development labs during July 2004. The first, Digi-Lounge 2A, was organised in partnership with Dance City and ran in Newcastle from 12th to 16th July, the second, Digi-Lounge 2B, was at essexdance’s base in Chelmsford from 20 July to 24 July.

These two labs gave the opportunity for professional dance artists with some experience of creating dance work with technologies to further their practice. Both labs offered the chance to:

Gain experience in motion capture and software programmes
Receive advice and support on developing project concepts and idea.
Network with new colleagues
Gain constructive feedback

Digi-Lounge 2A & 2B were both led by leading practitioners in this field. The moderator was Scott deLahunta. Bruno Martelli and Ruth Gibson (Igloo), Mark Coniglio and Dawn Stoppiello (Troika Ranch) and Guy Hilton worked as facilitators with the lab participants.
